Indicating of Rational vs. Emotional: You might have heard the concept of right-brain and left-brain functions: The left hemisphere of the brain is the rational, logical, organized, analytic, linear, critical side; the right hemisphere is the creative, emotional, intuitive side, the realm of the imagination.

Most people buy on emotion, the more you appeal to the right side of the brain, the more you’ll sell. You do this by using emotional words, not intellectual, rational, bland, and boring words. Here are a few examples:

Not an easy question to answer, considering the lack of information in Google’s business policy. Therefore we break the questions down in pieces.

Ideally Google and the other PPC search engines give tracking services because they want to sell more ads by:

•	Make it easier to start advertising at their search engine(low entry cost)
•	Money not spend on tracking service can be used buying ads

A lower entry cost can get more companies to participate in PPC advertising and thereby create more ads and drive prices up for competitive keywords. They want to get people starting and if they can make money with their ads, then they probably keep advertising.

Giving the complimentary product away to sell more of your main product has been a known strategy for many years. Like giving salty snakes away in the bar for free to make people thirsty. Because the big cost for software is the developing cost and therefore the cost of producing/selling an extra unit is close to zero; the idea of giving software away for free have bloomed with the internet.

We have been through more than a million keywords suggested by PPC search engines and have noticed that the suggestions come from at least three sources:

•	Their huge database of text from websites, who offend the words are found near each other or/and on the same page
•	Keywords used in the same search phrases or in a sequence of searchers.
•	Campaign keyword phrases that are triggered from keywords with similar meaning

Especially the last source is interesting, because this will give your competitor the keywords you are using.

Let’s make an experiment. We try to go to the keyword list we are processing in the moment from Google and find the first small list of keyword that look like the keyword phrases have been generated by adwords campaigns.

web marketing association s 2006 internet advertising competition
web marketing association s 2006 internet advertising competition iac
web marketing association s 2006 internet advertising competition iac awards

website optimization
website optimization for search
website optimization for search engines

If you were Google and were selling ads to many different companies, would you recommend keywords you know convert well and therefore could earn more money for higher ad prices?

We aren’t a SEO company so we can’t answer the last and important questions:
Do you think or better have evidence that one of your competitors have picked up one of your most profitable niches from a PPC search engine?

Are the PPC search engines giving you the information to find competitors’ profitable niches?

Do you think that PPC search engines are ranging the related terms using their free tracking tools, so you are more likely to get the under valuated keywords?

NB: It isn’t because we are so much against the PPC search engine given this data out, because if they are, then you will find the information in our keyword reports

The client satisfaction survey is one of the most misused marketing tools employed today. Most surveys fail to obtain reliable information. Even worse, many surveys obtain misleading information.

The single most important reason to perform a survey is to determine client intentions. What your clients say doesn’t always equal intentions.

A few years ago, in a focus group, Sony Corporation asked teenagers which color of boom box they would prefer? Black or yellow? The overwhelming response was yellow.

At the end of the three-hour session, the teens were told they could pick up their choice of a free boom box as a gift for participating in the focus group.

The overwhelming choice was black! The key to client intention is not what people say, it’s what they do.

Going online, you are able to see what people are doing down to a detail, just look at your log file or analytic tool for your website.

The main problem when you look at the data from your own web site is that it is mostly from the customers you are already attracting.

To expand your business you like to get to the customers that are not looking your way. Third part data are difficult, expensive and it might not even be possibly to buy them in the offline world.

In the online world there is a big market for user data. You can make a survey, but it might be better to get data from people that are actually in the buying moment.

The biggest collectors of online data are the search engines and because they make a living of selling ads, they give it away for free.

The search engines are actually not giving the whole picture away, but only small pieces, that help advertiser just enough to see the potential in buying more ads.

With a little technical help and a lot of hard work you are able to subtract the whole picture.

You might not be able to ask people specific question, but you can get data from millions of searchers every day from most industries. What you get is the words they use to search, how many searchers there is and the online competition for the search terms.

In this way you are able to identify:

•	Niches that are bigger than you thought and ready for expansion
•	Niches where you have been working hard to expand your market, but the demand is simple not there for an expansion of the market
•	Niches that no one are serving and is ready for you
•	Niches where you might have misunderstood what clients were searching for
•	What markets competitors are advertising in and thereby identifying who they are targeting in which markets
•	Where you can get your own pipeline of costumers coming to you online for a bargain price
•	Identifying a stream of high value costumers
•	Etc.

This is the way you extract the information from the search engines to give you the big picture:

•	Make a list of all the important words within your industry. Aim for between 1000 and 10 000 words depending on the industry.
•	Extract all related words from the search engines and delete the ones that are not relevant (use several search engines to get a broader picture).
•	Add information about how many people that search every day, how many ads for every keyword, the price for a click on an ad, the online competition for free search traffic etc.

You can get a more detailed description on how to make a keyword report here, a working sample keyword list/report with the top 100 keywords here and a more detailed description on how to use a keyword report here.

Stop wasting your money on client satisfaction surveys or at least justify your action in the comment.

New websites are having a hard time getting into the search engines’ index. The reason for it is to protect the search engines’ index from spam contents by delaying the entry of new contents and demanding authority measured by link power and other factors before the new content is allowed into the index.

All this seems to be a good thing and making it hard for spammers to get search traffic for automated produced contents. The problem is that it might help spammers steal contents from new and less authority websites.

The technique spammers are using are quite simple. They find new websites that haven’t been indexed and scrape them for their contents. The contents are usually of good quality, because new website owners put a lot of effort into their websites in the beginning. The spammer put it in established website that already has the age and link authority to get it indexed and rank for the contents.

When the new websites get a little older and starts to attract links, the spam websites might already have gotten the overhand because:

1.	They’ve had the contents indexed long before the original owner (the new website) and the new website might be seen as a spammer that copies the spammers’ contents.
2.	Because the contents is of good quality, other webmasters might already have start linking to the spammers website, because they found it in the searched results and it’s relevant and of good quality.
3.	Because it takes little work to copy, the spammer might have used the same techniques to collect content from many other new websites and thereby created a big website full of good contents.

What can you do to prevent spammers steal your contents?

1.	Try to prevent robots to index your site.
2.	Take legal action against the sites that is copying you.
3.	Buy an old authority website.
4.	Build links faster than the spammer and with website that the spammer can’t build relations with.

I think the best solution is to buy an old authority website and put an effort to build links from the beginning.

You can get some inspiration on how to build links here The big link building method list.
Do you have any other ideas how a new website can protect its contents against copy spammers?

What are the search engines doing to help? And what can they do?

I am always looking for ways to improve the efficient and quality of my work. Therefore I tried the Microsoft vista office package for 3 weeks and found it a big step back.

I use Word and Excel every day. I use Excel especial intensive, where I use almost all the functions and have to find ways around Excel’s limitations everyday.

The big difference I noticed was all the scroll down windows are replaced by graphic icons, which means that you have to start guessing, which icon is the equivalent of the functions that you knew by name.

I guess it is good for people at a beginner level, but very frustrating for people with a little experience. I used a lot of time finding the different icons and many times I gave up.

Now I have given up on the Microsoft vista office package and the experience have made me conscious that we need to find a replacement for Excel. The replacement will probably be a mixture of a more advanced spread sheet and our own developed software.

When you compare the development of Microsoft and Google you see different philosophies. Microsoft are a bit like the American car industry that are given what people want and have their main focus on design. While Google is like the Japanese car industry that might give in to customers design whishes, but have their main focus on giving people what they need -A product that is simple and work better that the competitors.

To get me as a customer Microsoft have to keep it simple and try to improve office package shortcomings.

Many words are used in two or more situations. Therefore it can come handy to exclude as many of the meanings you are not interested by using negative keywords.

In keyword research you see keywords that have many different meanings. The words with most meanings are abbreviations.

When we search in Google for the meaning of an abbreviation to decide if it belongs in the keyword report, it isn’t uncommon to find 10+ meanings.

If you were to let an ad showed when a searcher use an abbreviation, you better make sure it doesn’t have more than one meaning or you try to exclude as many searchers getting your ads by adding word in the negative keyword options.

You can find different meanings of a keyword by:

•	Analyze your log file or the result from your analytic software to see which words are used in combination with the keyword you are thinking adding negative keyword too.

•	Search in Google and see if the results suggest different information.

•	Use one of the search engines tools where they suggest related keywords. Google’s suggestion tool. Yahoo help suggest when you search at Yahoo.com and ask.com use the top left column to make suggestions on how too narrow your search.

•	Search your keyword report, for your trigger keyword, to find the keywords searchers are using together with your trigger keyword, which are relevant for your business area, but might not be relevant for your ad.

•	Search sites as Acronymfinder.

•	Use the suggestion tool most search engines offer to help their advertisers find new keywords to trigger new ads. Google’s keyword suggestion tool and Yahoo’s Keyword Selector Tool

As always in online marketing use your skill to get the best conversion and then expand your campaign to all relevant media.

Negative keywords can be an important tool to narrow down the customers that are interested in your ad.

Search engines are using different methods to make their task of indexing the internet easier. One method is to filter stopwords out of the text. This article describes the use of stop words and questions whether Google is still not using stop words.

A stop word is a common word such as “the,” “of,” “on,” and “a” and is used differently by different search engines.

This is how Google describes their use of stop words:

Google ignores common words and characters, such as “where” and “how,” as well as certain single digits and single letters. These terms rarely help narrow a search and can slow search results. We call them “stop words.”

Google ignores stop words when they’re placed in searches alongside less common words. For example, a search for [ The Sound and the Fury ] will only return results for the terms “Sound” and “Fury.” However, a search that only includes stop words — [ The Who ], for example — will be processed as is.

There are two ways to instruct Google to include stop words in your search. You can highlight each stop word by placing a plus sign (+) directly before it. For example: [ Star Wars Episode +I ]

A second method for including stop words is to put quotation marks around two or more words. For example: [ "Star Wars Episode I" ]

Here is a list of stop words that Google are ignoring today:

a, are, as, at, be, by, for, how, in, is, it, of, on, or, that, the, this, to, was, what, when, where, who, with, und, the.

As illustrated in the screen shot, the none stop words are presented in blue link color and stop words are black in the “web results” line in Google.

As you can see in the screen shot and try for yourself, Google is clearly indicating that they are using a stop word list, but the results are changing when you use stop words in your search.

In Google’s official explanation of their use of stop words they use the search for “The Sound and the Fury” as an example. I get this results then search for” The Sound and the Fury”

And this result then I search for “Sound Fury“:

As you can see the version with the stop words delivers 300,000 results more.

The most interesting is the third result that is different for the two searchers. The title that comes third for the search that includes the stop words is: Faulkner’s The Sound and
the Fury: A Hypertext Edition, and for the search without the stop words: Sound and Fury – Home.

It is quiet obvious that Google is trying to see if the stop words are important for us and deliver results in the third positions that include the stop words in the title.

Google and the other search engines get more and more computer power. It might have been a problem to include stop words in the search results 5 years ago, but now it is probably not a big problem. Therefore, we expect to see the development continuing until it is irrelevant to talk about stop words.

We conclude that a stop word isn’t as important as the other keywords, but you can’t ignore them when you optimize your web copy, because Google uses the stop words when they decide which results they deliver first.

It is time to help the search engines improve their results for long tail keywords for the mutual benefit of searchers, webmasters and the SEO-industry.

Then I was playing around with Spyfu to put together an adword campaign for my site. I found that even companies specialized in making tools for keyword research or keyword reports are ranking for keywords that have nothing to do with their theme.

Then I looked at my own stats, I was ranking for one relevant keyword phrase, but the rest of the keywords were not relevant. Here is the complete list of irrelevant keywords:

Dictionary, spanish-greek, algonquin translater, english-maltese translater, spanish-greek, translater,
Algonquin, english-maltese.

This made me think about the searcher that was sent to the wrong place by Google and if there was something that I could do so they didn’t waist their time at my site.

Therefore, I like to suggest that the search engines make a site, where you can inform which irrelevant keywords your site have been found for. The search engines can then filter your site for the informed irrelevant keywords in the search results.

If the search engines can make a safe way to confirming that it is the site owner that is giving the information I can’t imagine a site owner that will give wrong information by purpose.

The best collaboration is done if all parties have the same interest. Therefore we have to ask:

Why would a site owner inform the search engines about the keywords that are irrelevant?
1.	Improve ranking because the average searcher stay longer and don’t return to the search engine. Therefore the website will look more relevant then the search engine use user data in there ranking.
2.	Save bandwidth
3.	Help to make a better Internet

Why would the search engine offer this service?
1.	Filter their results for irrelevant results
2.	Have a live dataset to train their models to filter irrelevant results

Why will the SEO-industry participate?
1.	The more relevant the search results are, the more of a competitive advance over offline information will online information get and that will lead to an increased online marketing market share.
2.	Improve the user data and therefore improve relevant ranking.

I believe that it is difficult and time consuming to make a training dataset to train the search engines to filter irrelevant long tail keyword phrases. You have to study a website closer to be sure that a long tail keyword phrases aren’t relevant.

What do you think about the idea?

Would you use your time to inform the search engine that your site is getting found for irrelevant keywords?

Do you have other suggestions to solve this problem?

NB: The reason that our website is found for these keywords is that we have made a readymade translation keyword report were we give the 200 most searched keywords as an appetizer. You can see for yourself here.

NNB: If BestPracticeMarketing.com can rank for top 200 most searched keyword phrases within translation, with a new site about keywords, with two inbound link from blogs, then there is a niche that is left unattended
